HP announced Thursday that it will cut up to 20,000 jobs as part of an ongoing restructuring plan.
The Bay Area tech giant expects to save $300 million by the end of its fiscal year in October 2025 due to the cuts, though it will incur $150 million in restructuring costs, mainly due to labor expenses.
HP employs around 580,000 workers across 59 countries, according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the cuts.
The restructuring plan, called “Future Now,” was introduced in November 2022, with the needful goal of cutting 70,000 jobs. The latest layoffs will bring the total number of job cuts under the plan to 90,000.
After this new round of cuts, HP expects to save $1.9 billion through the plan, with total restructuring charges reaching about $1.2 billion.
The announcement follows the Palo Alto company’s stronger-than-expected financial results for the first quarter. HP saw increased demand for its new technologies, particularly ink-jet cartridge subscriptions, with Chief Executive Officer Enrique Lores noting a 25% growth in the printer market.
However, HP warned that tariffs will affect its second-quarter earnings, resulting in lower-than-expected results.
“The company has made significant progress building a globally diverse supply chain, and by the end of fiscal year 2025, expects more than 90 percent of HP cartridges sold in North America will be built outside of China,” the company said in its earnings report. “China will continue to be an important manufacturing hub for the rest of the world.”
For the first quarter, HP posted a profit of $565 million, down from $622 million a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter increased by 2.4% to $13.5 billion, with personal systems revenue rising by 5%. However, printing revenue fell by 2%.

That's a 'new technology'?
I'm surprised that 'market' hasn't completely disappeared. Ridiculous.

There's a reason they're known as the "House of Printers".

The XXL cartridges, only available under Instant Ink, are new technology.
HP is doing Instant Ink customers no favors, XXL in reduces their shipping costs.

Oh yes. My Dad got one of the first 3 HP Time Domain Reflectometers on the West Coast. I would up being the operator of that 75 pound thing. Not bad right at the end of high school.
10 years ago, my TDR did everything but measure impedance devotions, but fit on my tool belt.

One of their common LaserJet Tank printers that take cheap toner have an interesting feature: You can't replace the drum.

The test equipment is now Agilent.
I think Compaq ProLiant servers went to HPE. Same with networking gear.
That leaves printers & PCs for HP.

increasing share of a shrinking market.
I keep a tiny wireless printer (Cannon TR150 about the size of two college text books) sitting mostly dormant in a closet for the couple of times a year when I need to print (e.g. DMV sometimes still requires physical documents) .

I think corporations have just had a come to Jesus moment involving laying off thousands of US workers, then filing for H1B workers the following day.
