I Keep Seeing GILFs Everywhere

The church parking lot on Elm has one broken meter and two rows of faded stripes, and I have been there at 10:47 a.m. every Sunday for five weeks. Not for God. For the data. Because there is a certain point in a man's decline when the dating market becomes a census and the census becomes a fever. I keep seeing GILFs everywhere. Church. Hot tub. Parking lot. Helen Mirren still hot as a federal reserve note. Hoeflation priced the twenties out of the dating pool until a woman with a mortgage, a pill organizer, and a floral housecoat looks like liquidity. Suddenly the local romance graph is climbing over a septuagenarian in pearls. The twenties got bought by guys who have the same face as the nineteenth-born except their credit score is also the same, and now the market has discovered grandma stock: women in their 70s and 80s who stayed feminine, who kept the soft face, not the new masculine gym-face that looks like a tax audit with cheekbones. They clear the local dating pool. They clear the whole county. They clear my will to participate in anything.

And church is a gilf petting zoo with better lighting. That is the thesis. If God made the world, God also put a forty percent discount on powder rooms and a sixty percent chance of a widow with a sensible purse and a laugh like a screen door. The hot tub is the natural habitat. Steam does something to the face that no serum can compete with. It reveals the architecture: neck, clavicle, the little collarbone moat that makes a man suddenly understand why empires fell. My tongue is an anal virgin. My brain is a cathedral full of pigeons. I am losing the plot in a way that is not merely sexual but economic. This is an autopsy of desire conducted by a man whose hands are shaking so hard he mistook his own heartbeat for a sports betting tip. Which I should have known was a mistake because every game is a slot machine dressed as a narrative. Did I bet on Ohtani to hit a home run? Of course I did. Did I lose because the universe is a kid's palate cleanser, where some child smoked him by an HR and my retirement account flinched? Yes. A goose got taught a lesson by another kid and I thought, yea we're actually so fuqed. Then the feed went to a blip about girls in Pakistan being sold for two thousand dollars and I did not scroll past it fast enough, and then I scrolled past it anyway, which is the American condition: not cruelty exactly, but a wet, twitchy inability to hold grief long enough to do anything with it. I am a man with an erection problem and a leftover sermon stuck under my ribs.

Sept 21 is supposed to be an Earth Wind & Fire meme day, everybody posting horns like the sun has a mortgage, but I am not vibing, I am auditing. I saw a woman get out of a Buick at the pharmacy and my nervous system played the Fonzie water-skiing nostalgia music, because back when a man could be stupid enough to be cool, he could also be protected by a network, which is what the silver-haired women have: the network of a life where somebody else already handled the hard part. I thought about how the twenties are now basically an unpaid internship in looking anxious under fluorescent lighting. The seventies are the opposite. The seventies have had the internship, quit, been fired, been laid off, died a little, and come out the other side with a little black dress and a hearing aid that costs more than my rent. That is the gilf premium. It is not only sex. It is the absence of explanation. She is not texting you three paragraphs about her attachment style. She has survived three husbands, one business venture, and the entire invention of the internet, and if she wants you, the terms are simple: bring the ice and shut up.

The problem is I have no inventory. The artificial-intelligence Billy Bass in the corner of my head is yelling gym speeches because the economy has become one man in a tank top screaming at a skeleton. Everything is a motivational corpse. Claude did a three-hour task in three minutes and now work starts losing purpose like a man whose boss just said, "Hey, we're doing great." The work was never about the work. The work was about the feeling of being needed, and now the feeling is being outsourced to a chatbot that can summarize my conversations before I have them. Apple Watch mic turns the wrist into a snitch, and some algorithm starts taking notes on the way I breathe when I see a woman with a Target tote and a rhinestone pen. This is the market of the old: not porn, not dating apps, just a watch that rats on male loneliness. My heart rate spikes like a bad trade. My longing has a closing bell.

Then I saw the Waymo plows a Denver farmers market headline and thought, if Tesla had done it, there would be forty thousand articles, a documentary narrator with a whiskey cough, and a congressional hearing scheduled during a football game. But because it is a robot van, we get four paragraphs and a shrug. That is the country. The robots are allowed to embarrass us with one small story, and the humans are allowed to embarrass us with everything else. A Canadian candidate ran a Hindi campaign ad and I thought the diaspora is the only opposition party left with coherent grammar. The India EPI score was in the feed next to a New Delhi grocery story about the price of tomatoes, and for a second the whole planet turned into a market where air is a commodity and produce is climate grief wearing a hat. This is where I snap back to the gilf thesis because the gilf thesis is the only one I have left, the only one that fits inside a head that keeps leaking other facts like a tire with a slow puncture.

The hot tub at the rec center opens at noon. If I went, I would not swim. I would hover. I would be a pelvic oarfish. A long stupid ribbon of desire drifting under chlorine and shame. There would be three women and one folding chair, and one of them would have a silver braid and a blouse that knows its business, and the lighting would make the steam look like a stage set for the fall of Rome. They are not asking for anything. They are simply present, which is more than the twenty-somethings can do. The twenty-somethings are priced into the background by rent, by student loans, by the fact that nobody has enough room in their head to be attractive. But grandma stock has had the room. Grandma stock has had the decades. Grandma stock has had the entire American century rearrange the furniture while she kept her nails done and did not complain.

And then the feed goes to McAfee's condo demolition and some guy on the internet says the whole thing was conspiracy bait, controlled demolition, architecture of guilt, and I believe it not because I am smart but because I have been trained by the news to believe that buildings lie. The kapparot chicken energy is real: you take a live bird and wave your sins over its head and then the bird goes flying and the internet goes flying and everybody is looking for an Assange I'm back energy in a world that has made every return into another announcement. It is too much. It is too much and not enough. That is the country. That is the body. That is the hot tub.

I have a parking lot epiphany and a browser tab that says Operation Epic Failure, which is not a title, it is a medical condition. The gilf thesis is not a joke. It is a market distortion. It is a demand-side failure. It is what happens when young women get squeezed by economics until they become invisible and older women, because they already survived the squeeze, become the only visible liquidity left. Meanwhile I am in a church lot at 10:47 counting widows like a day trader who peaked in middle school, tongue still an anal virgin, still losing the plot.

80 years old is the new 40 years old as young betas are priced out of even single mothers. Long live grey pubic hair.
