The 1918 flu was worse globally and per person, but COVID-19 caused more total raw deaths in the United States because the modern population is much larger.

Who They Hurt Most

•    1918 Flu: Disproportionately killed healthy young adults between 20 and 40 years old. This meant a massive loss of working-age people and parents.
•    COVID-19: Mostly kills older adults (people over 65) and people with other serious health problems. 

Medical Care and Speed

•    1918 Flu: Spread with terrifying speed and high deadliness in a short time. Doctors had no vaccines, no flu treatments, no intensive care units (ICUs), and no mechanical ventilators. 
•    COVID-19: Spread more slowly over several years. Scientists created vaccines, antiviral drugs, and advanced hospital treatments that saved millions of lives. 

Economic and Social Disruption

•    1918 Flu: Burned through the population in about two intense years, and society quickly returned to normal.
•    COVID-19: Lasted much longer with repeated waves. Because the modern world is heavily connected and urbanized, it caused deeper, longer-lasting stress on the global economy.

There was a flu in 1968 (so I’ve heard) the “Hong Kong Flu” that was extremely bad, @4 million people died. 
The world did not shut down or force unsafe shoddy vaccines.
