The individual responsible for the botched renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was the manager of President Donald Trump's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, a New York Times investigation has revealed.

Despite having no formal qualifications in architecture or engineering and remaining a private Trump employee, the New York Times discovered he "played an off-the-books role in government decisions" concerning the project.

The investigation revealed that Schutzenhofer attended the World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas in January while seeking potential solutions, where vendors pointed him toward Rodney Jarboe, president of Missouri-based Creative Polymers.

Schutzenhofer eventually decided on a polyurea liner coating, but tariffs made sourcing the material difficult, prompting Jarboe to collaborate with California-based Rhino Linings, which then enlisted Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings to assist with applying the product - despite that firm never having previously won a government contract.

The renovation rapidly fell apart after the Trump administration announced it complete in early June. The blue liner started peeling almost right away, and algae reappeared in the pool soon after it was refilled.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro's office eventually confirmed in a court filing that "the damage was the result of a botched installation."
