This was pre big-data era so believable - but yeah probably just theory since there's now way to definitively know how much storage they were using.

I actually just found a local copy of a geocities page I make in 1999 where all the images were ~50k and the text was clean html so yes, I believe.
All this bloated css and frontpage garbage now is 99% overhead with 1k per sentence.

And the sad part is Yahoo! had no interest is saving any of the data, Archive.org or others worked on the mirroring projects, and there is a lot of data that was lost forever.
