Here in BOISE, you don't need one, although you are perfectly legal to carry one. No permit needed.
In the East Bay of San Francisco, one **in store** bank branch I recently saw is protected with Class 1 bullet resisting glazing - to stop multiple high calibre armor piercing rounds.
