My great grandmother was an absolute legend. Brave as hell. Came out as a trans woman decades before it was socially acceptable, before the rainbow industrial complex, before anyone had a flag for it.

She did it in 1912. Standing on the deck of the Titanic. Right as they started loading the lifeboats.

Captain Smith was yelling "women and children first." Officers were pulling pistols on the steerage dudes who tried to rush the boats. The band was still playing. Ice water coming up the stairs. And my great granddad (soon to be grandmom) looked at the freezing Atlantic, looked at the half-empty collapsible, and said, clear as a bell:

"Actually, I'm a woman now."

They put her in the boat. Gave her a blanket. Someone handed her a flask. She never looked back.

Family legend says she sat between two first-class ladies who were still in their nightgowns and just nodded along while they sobbed about lost jewelry. When a sailor asked if she needed anything she said "just a cigarette and some peace, darling." She smoked it like a man who'd just discovered the ultimate life hack.

Survived. Made it to New York. Changed the name on the paperwork. Married some poor bastard who never asked too many questions. Had kids the old-fashioned way with a little creative anatomy and a lot of denial. Lived to ninety-four. Buried in a dress. The headstone just says "beloved mother."

Every Thanksgiving some cousin tries to make it wholesome. "She was so brave, living her truth in a time of rigid gender norms." No. She was a 6'2" coal-shoveler from Belfast who did the math on drowning versus sitting in a wooden tub with rich widows and chose correctly. That is peak male pattern recognition. That is evolutionary psychology with a life vest.

Modern discourse would call her a pioneer. I'd call her the original "women and children first" speedrunner. Any man who says he wouldn't have done the same is either lying or already dead of hypothermia with a bunch of other honorable idiots at the bottom of the North Atlantic.

Rest in power, you absolute unit. You saw the iceberg, you saw the policy, and you transitioned harder than anyone before or since. They should put a plaque on the wreck.
