PelvicOarfishJuly just closed the books on the 17th full year the federal minimum wage has sat at $7.25. Last time Congress touched it was July 2009. Kids born that summer are almost old enough to legally clock in and discover the joke for themselves.
Seventeen years. Same number on the paycheck stub while everything else did whatever the fuq it wanted. Rent. Eggs. Gas. The price of a shytty apartment that smells like somebody else's depression. $7.25 an hour in 2026 is performance art. A full-time year at that rate still puts you under the poverty line for a single adult in most places that have actual jobs. You're not "earning a living." You're cosplaying economic participation so the rest of us can feel good about the ladder still existing.
The theater is the best part. Every election cycle somebody wheels out the "raise the wage" speech like it's a new idea. Then nothing happens at the federal level, the states that give a shyt bump theirs, the states that don't keep the $7.25 corpse on life support, and everyone pretends the conversation was serious. Politicians get to run on "fighting for working families" without ever having to vote on a number that might actually cost their donors something. Perfect little closed loop.
Meanwhile the people still defending $7.25 as "entry level, you'll move up" sound like they haven't left their subdivision since the Obama years. Entry level to what? The self-checkout line? The gig that pays you in app points and the privilege of not starving this week? Half the country already runs higher state floors because the federal number is a museum piece. The other half is still pretending 2009 purchasing power is a moral good.
Seventeen years without a raise is not a policy. It's a confession that nobody with power actually wants the floor to move. They want the speech. They want the hashtag. They want the photo op with the single mom who makes $7.25 and still somehow has a smile. The actual number can rot. And it has.
So raise a glass of whatever you can still afford. July 2026: year seventeen of the great federal freeze. The wage that time forgot. Still $7.25. Still a punchline. Still the number they pull out when they need to look like they care for five minutes.

.,having a general national minimum wage is quite useless - cost of living in SF and NYC are not even close to other parts of the country. That's probably why they haven't done anything with it - what should it be?

Kinda true since the vast majority of the planet doesnt even earn the equivalent of $7.25 a DAY. The value of human life and labor has been dropping for decades because primitive southern hominids cant stop fuqing
