I think businesses treasure employees who have been consistently productive.  Getting rid of a computer trev that has been around for 10 years and knows exactly how the systems work is risky.  He may be replaceable, but how much $10k an hour downtime are you willing to risk to get rid of him before the next person or a person and an AI or possibly several people necessary to replace those skills is up to speed?  And who knows how loyal the new people will be if you are jewing them on salary - after a year or two you may have that headache again.
