Currently my monthly social security benfit is right at $4,000 a month if we include the medicare Part B premium which is $202.90 and taken out of my benefit before I ever see it.

My wife also received 50% of my retirement age benefit which buts her just over $1,500 a month before her Part B premium is taken out.  Right at $5,000 a month which is higher than average.

What happens if congress cuts social security benefits by 25%? 

The wife and I would be OK because from our total retirement income, which includes IRA RMDs, we will manage to save $2,000 a month so we just wouldn't be able to save as much.

If social security was completely taken away we could probably live for the rest of our lives, 10 years maybe, with zero social security.   But $50,000 a year can eat up savings rather quickly.

But what about someone who receives just $1,900 a month? Could they handle a 25% cut?

In case you are wondering I paid a total of $275,000 in social security taxes over my lifetime. In 1990 I paid $6,361 in social security tax but in 1990 $6,361 was a lot more money than it is today.
