EXCLUSIVE: A suspected MS-13 gang member set to go on trial next week for the horrific 2018 slaying of his California girlfriend's 10-year-old son is a native of El Salvador and living in the U.S. illegally, according to a law enforcement source.
Kareem Ernesto Leiva, 37, and his American girlfriend Heather Maxine Barron, 33, are both charged with murder and torture in the death of her son, Anthony Avalos, as well as child abuse against two other children in the home, court records show.
Prosecutors allege the boy had been beaten, starved, forced to kneel on rice, force-fed, whipped and more in a home where he was allegedly subjected to "extreme physical pain and suffering."
He just came here from El Salvador for an opportunity to build a better life.

It should allow for separate refugee statuses so we can have economic refugees, political refugees, and humanitarian refugees.
It should discourage people from just coming. The government should be empowered to provide direct refugee flights when appropriate.
It should have work requirements for most categories.
It should encourage cooperation between nations, sharing police records, encourage more nations to accept refugees.

Border security means knowing who is coming and for what purpose. What happens after apprehension is a pure policy issue. Right now, the asylum law governs, and that means people must be given a hearing.

No, I would like things to be orderly, clean, and safe. That means crossing at lawful entry points.
However, the law says that asylum can be sought without regard to how a person arrived here.
And, the vast majority of people will cross at a lawful point if they are given the opportunity to do so.

The more I argued with them, the better I came to know their dialectic.
First they counted on the stupidity of their adversary, and then, when there was no other way out, they themselves simply played stupid. If all this didn't help, they pretended not to understand, or, if challenged, they changed the subject in a hurry, quoted platitudes which, if you accepted them, they immediately related to entirely different matters, and then, if again attacked, gave ground and pretended not to know exactly what you were talking about.
