SAMSUNG SDI to Collaborate on All-Solid-State Battery Validation Project with BMW Group

cool Elon better be looking into this shyt. I would actually consider an electric vehicle with this.

SAMSUNG SDI today announced that it has signed a trilateral agreement with Germany's premium manufacturer BMW Group and U.S. battery technology company Solid Power to collaborate on an all-solid-state battery validation project.

Under this arrangement, SAMSUNG SDI will supply ASSB cells, featuring enhanced both energy density and safety, by utilizing the solid electrolyte developed by Solid Power, a leading all-solid-state battery technology company, based in the United States. BMW will develop modules and packs for ASSB cells. The three partners aim to evaluate the performance of ASSB cells based on the agreed parameters and requirements, and to integrate them into BMW’s next-generation evaluation vehicles.

ASSB cells use solid electrolyte instead of liquid electrolyte found in conventional lithium-ion batteries. They offer superior safety and can achieve higher energy density compared with conventional batteries, enabling electric vehicles to drive longer ranges without having to accept disadvantages in terms of weight of the overall storage system.

The collaboration carries significance in that the three specialized companies have established a practical collaboration system and a model for global value chains for ASSB cells, aiming to pave the way for their commercialization by bringing together their complementary expertise in cells manufacturing, automaking and materials development.

BMW has selected SAMSUNG SDI as a partner, considering its long-standing trust in the battery maker built through years-long partnership, as viewed by industry observers. Also, known as the front-runner in the all-solid-state battery territory, Samsung SDI is recognized for its technological prowess in the whole new battery field.

The upcoming collaboration could draw industry attention as the long-running partnership between SAMSUNG SDI and BMW expands to the new arena.

SAMSUNG SDI and BMW have maintained their collaborative relations since 2009 when the German automotive group chose the Korean battery supplier.

"Technological competitiveness in batteries would ultimately lead to innovation in electric vehicles," said Stella Joo-Young Go, Executive Vice President of ASSB Commercialization Team at SAMSUNG SDI. "SAMSUNG SDI will work closely with great global partners like BMW and Solid Power to take the lead in commercializing ASSB."

"With SAMSUNG SDI joining our partnership with Solid Power, we gain significant momentum on our path advancing the development of new battery cell technologies," said Martin Schuster, Vice President Battery Cell and Cell Module at the BMW Group. "This global collaboration is another proof point of our overarching goal: to be always in a position to offer our customers state of the art battery technology."

"We are excited to partner with SAMSUNG SDI and BMW to progress the development of all-solid-state batteries," said John Van Scoter, President and CEO of Solid Power. "Our solid electrolyte technology is designed for stability and conductivity, and by working closely with global leaders in automotive and battery innovation, we strive to bring ASSB technology closer to widespread adoption."

SAMSUNG SDI has been making constant efforts to build up its technological prowess for commercialization of ASSB cells.

In March 2023, SAMSUNG SDI established a pilot line at the Suwon R&D Center in South Korea, the first of its kind in the country, and began producing prototypes at the end of 2023. Sample tests are currently underway in collaboration with multiple customers.

SAMSUNG SDI has been working to boost battery capacity year after year through cell enlargement, and to complete tasks to set up manufacturing processes and supply chains for commercialization.

As expectations run high for adoption of ASSBs not only for EVs but also for robots and other new applications, SAMSUNG SDI is in talks with potential customers and intensify efforts to commercialize ASSB cells.

Verge TS Pro E-Bike With Solid State Batteries - CES 2026

The bike’s torque and performance numbers grab plenty of attention—737 lb-ft of torque from its hubless in-wheel Donut Lab “Donut motor” and 0–60 mph in 3.5 seconds—but its battery pack is getting all the attention. Verge claims it’s the first true solid-state traction battery to serve in an electric road vehicle. In long-range models, a 33.3-kWh pack delivers 370 miles of range, recharging to 80 percent at 200 kW via a Tesla-style NACS plug in just 10 minutes. A smaller 20.2-kWh solid-state pack that charges at 100 kW is good for 217 miles. Both can add 186 miles in 10 minutes.

Specifics of the battery electrode chemistry were not divulged, except to say they’re non-flammable (confirming the “true solid-state,” non-gel nature of the electrolyte), and that they’re “made from materials that are abundant worldwide, ensuring that materials availability will not cause production issues.” This language typically signals cobalt- and nickel-avoidance. In a solid-state context, it suggests lithium-metal anodes paired with sulfide or similar solid electrolytes, and potentially iron-, manganese-, or sulfur-based cathode strategies. Stay tuned.

Deliveries of the TS Pro began with a conventional 20.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, also good for 217 miles, priced just shy of $30,000. The list price for the bike with the same-size solid-state battery is unchanged, suggesting no huge manufacturing cost difference. The bigger battery lists at $34,900 (exclusive of delivery charges, which vary by location).

Stellantis and battery developer Factorial have officially moved solid-state battery technology onto the street, announcing that a Dodge Charger Daytona development vehicle is now undergoing testing with advanced solid-state battery cells.

The milestone marks the first integration of Factorial’s FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology) solid-state batteries into a Stellantis vehicle and the first automotive application of the technology in North America.

The companies said the Charger-based prototype is being tested in a calibration program designed to evaluate battery performance, safety, durability and reliability under real-world driving and charging conditions.

Solid-state batteries are widely viewed as one of the most promising next-generation EV technologies because they could deliver greater energy density, faster charging, safer everyday use, and lower costs than the lithium-ion batteries currently found in most electric vehicls. In 2025, Stellantis and Factorial demonstrated FEST cells capable of 375 Wh/kg energy density, charging from 15 percent to 90 percent in just 18 minutes, while operating in temperatures ranging from -22 degrees F to 113 degrees F.

Stellantis said integrating the cells into a production-based vehicle required significant engineering work. The automaker had to develop a patented battery-pack architecture designed specifically to accommodate the solid-state cells while maximizing their performance. Engineers also modified battery controls and pack systems to meet automotive safety and durability standards.

“Battery development is a balancing act,” said Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer Ned Curic. “This milestone shows we are bringing solid-state batteries closer to our customers with the potential for longer range, faster charging and lower costs.”

The Charger test vehicle is the first step in a previously announced multi-stage development program between Stellantis and Massachusetts-based Factorial, which counts Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai ,and Kia among its strategic investors and partners.

The companies said the road-testing phase will help validate the technology as they continue working toward future production applications.

Holy shyt that’s insane.  By comparison my middleweight sport bike has about 80 ft-lbs of torque.  The Verge will have a ton of control software that limits power to the wheel (traction control, wheelie control, stability control, etc) otherwise it would be completely unmanageable even for the top MotoGP racers.
