It's generally a mistake to try and hold historical figures to contemporary mores.  Was he 'perfect'?  No.  Was he a pit-bull of a reporter who broke important stories, despite the fact that the people in power might not have been comfortable with his reporting?  Yes.

The current crop of senior reporters are self-important hacks, who learned their craft when a million people couldn't compare notes in essentially real time.

So, Wallace evolved his views. That's what smart people do.

I hold the view that Nazis need not hate Jews in order to be Nazis.

The original Nazis hated all kinds of people besides Jews.

The current bagger government holds largely similar views to the original Nazis. And a good portion even hate Jews, though some love Jews.

Your view ("new breed of fascists") might be the easier message to convey.
