Its pay should be fair but not excessive, and it should never be set out as a vehicle for profiting off of healthcare at the expense of caregiving.

Do you really want dumb people performing brain surgery?

I've heard people say things about vocation vs. job for a lot of fields. I even heard that said about software engineering during the dot com era. It's usually an excuse to try to lowball salaries by separating the value of the work from the pay.

What's the matter with $8.00/hour for brain surgery?

In Europe they make a wage like anybody else, in the US it's all protiteering.
I know of a few G bill doctors that suck and should be hospital employees not trying to make millions.

MagickBuy one fewer aircraft carrier and open 50 new medical schools. That should help on the supply side. If you want to help the demand side, send 30 million illegals home.

There are surgeons and other specialists who make a lot of money, by focusing on difficult areas of practice. Most people in healthcare aren't making Finance Bro money. Why do Finance Bros deserve to be outlandishly compensated? Shouldn't they be doing the job because they love the work?

The rate of pay for private practice is high because of the liability insurance. The really tricky stuff is still all hospital work that requires facilities and conjoined specialties and staff.

It depends on how old you are Mr. Ron_Santo_Redux

In 1965 I was 21 years old and back then $20.00 was equivalent to $211.42
In 1975 $20.00 was equivalent to $123.8 and in 1985 $20.00 was equivalent to $61.90.
I remember 1965 when a $100.00 bill was fuqing huge! You saw one of these very, very rarely.

It's good that you mention insurance companies. These are large corporations making billions in profit, adding overhead costs to the healthcare system, both for liability insurance and administering healthcare insurance. How much of every healthcare dollar spent actually goes to salaries?

Private medical practice is so uncommon now that it’s not really a significant part of healthcare costs.
