Face it, humans are SHYT. Any functional political system has to accommodate that. Unfortunately people don't like being told the truth (i.e. YOU'RE ALL QUNTS) so coercion has to be dressed up in comforting lies. Religion may have retreated to the sidelines, but nothing has changed there.
