The United States Coast Guard is allowing a Russian government-owned oil tanker to reach Cuba, according to a US official briefed on the matter quoted by The New York Times, potentially easing a worsening energy crisis on the island. The tanker, carrying an estimated 730,000 barrels of crude oil, was less than 15 miles from Cuban territorial waters on Sunday afternoon, according to ship-tracking data.

The development comes after the administration of Donald Trump imposed what officials describe as an effective oil blockade on Cuba earlier this year.

Since January, Washington has warned countries against supplying fuel to the island and, in at least one instance, redirected a tanker away from Cuban waters. The Coast Guard has vessels in the region capable of intercepting the Russian tanker, but no such order was issued, according to the US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. As of Sunday afternoon, the plan was to allow the ship to proceed unless instructed otherwise.

It remains unclear why the White House did not intervene or whether future shipments from Russia will be permitted.
