Chicago police have arrested a 25-year-old Rogers Park man in connection with Thursday’s fatal shooting of Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman, according to records obtained by the Tribune.
An arrest report obtained by the Tribune offers no information about a possible motive for the shooting, which took place shortly after 1 a.m. on the Loyola Beach Main. It states that witnesses told police a man wearing black clothes and a black mask pointed a gun at Gorman and fired one round at her as she tried to run away.
Nearby surveillance video captured the suspect a few minutes after the shooting walking westbound to Pratt Avenue, according to the report. Police were able to identify the man, in part, because he of his “distinct limp.” The suspect then entered a nearby apartment building, the report stated, and appeared on the building’s internal surveillance cameras without a mask.
The Tribune is not naming him because he has not been charged. Cook County court records show the suspect has a single misdemeanor charge for shoplifting from the State Street Macy’s in June 2023.
A judge issued a warrant for him in that case after he failed to appear for a court date. Records show the warrant was still outstanding as of September 2023.
A police report obtained by the Tribune offered scant details about the shooting, only stating that Rogers Park (24th) District police found Gorman on the Main at Loyola Beach in Rogers Park with a gunshot wound to the back.
Officers recovered a single shell casing about 40 feet from Gorman’s body, the report stated. Police said in a statement she’d been walking with friends when a gunman walked up to them, pulled out a weapon and fired at them.
Gorman, of Yorktown Heights, New York, was studying business at Loyola and involved with the Christian campus group Cru, friends said at a memorial service Thursday night.
Classmates described Gorman as cheerful and “always smiling,” with a good reputation around campus despite the short time she spent there.
In a statement released Saturday morning before news of the arrest, Gorman’s family said she had been out with her friends Thursday in hopes of seeing the Northern Lights.
Describing Gorman as someone with “a way of leaving people better than she found them,” her family said she “was exactly where she should have been — close to campus, surrounded by friends, living her life.”
“What happened to Sheridan cannot be reduced to the idea of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” the statement said. “This is not an abstraction. This is the loss of a daughter. The loss of a sister. The loss of a future filled with milestones that will now never come. Our family is forever changed.”

A Venezuelan migrant is in custody and being questioned in connection with the murder of Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman at the Loyola Beach Main early Thursday morning, according to multiple sources.
The 25-year-old man was arrested shortly before 9 p.m. Friday at an apartment building in the 6800 block of North Sheridan Road during the execution of a search warrant related to the case, sources said. A firearm was recovered during the search and is being tested to determine whether a shell casing found near Gorman’s body was ejected from the weapon.
Sources familiar with the investigation said there is no indication that any provocation or altercation preceded the shooting. They said Gorman, 18, and her friends had gone to the lakefront to take pictures when they crossed paths with the suspect on the Main. He was wearing a ski mask or other face covering at the time. As they passed, he fired one shot, striking Gorman.
Chicago police initially said she had been shot in the head, but the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Friday that she died from a gunshot wound to the torso.
Detectives used video footage from multiple cameras to trace the suspect to the Sheridan Road apartment building. Footage from the building captured him without the face covering, and someone associated with the complex recognized him, sources said. The building is less than two blocks from the murder scene.
No charges have been filed as of this report. Court records show the man was arrested in the summer of 2023 for shoplifting at Macy’s, 111 North State Street. He never showed up for court, and a warrant has been out for his arrest since August 2023, records show.
Gorman, of Yorktown Heights, New York, has said she planned to major in business at Loyola.
CWB Chicago will continue to update this story as it develops.

BBobopIllegal accused of executing Loyola student Sheridan Gorman was cut loose twice under Biden
An illegal Venezuelan migrant accused of executing a Loyola University Chicago freshman from New York entered the US under the Biden administration, and was released under Chicago’s sanctuary city laws before the killing, the Department of Homeland Security said Sunday.
Jose Medina-Medina, 25, allegedly murdered 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman early Thursday morning while she walked along the Chicago lakefront with her friends, according to a DHS release obtained by Fox News.
The illegal alien was caught and released at the border under President Joe Biden’s administration in May 2023, according to the DHS.
Medina-Medina was also previously released from local custody in Chicago— a sanctuary city — just a month later after he was arrested for shoplifting from Macy’s.
The gunman approached Gorman, a freshman from Yorktown, New York, while wearing a mask at around 1:30 a.m., according to cops.
As Gorman attempted to flee, he allegedly shot her in the head, before escaping to a nearby apartment building.
“Sheridan Gorman had her whole life ahead of her before this cold-blooded killer decided to end her life,” DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said.
“She was failed by open border policies and sanctuary politicians who released this illegal alien twice before he went on to commit this heinous murder,” she added.
“We are calling on Governor Pritzker and Chicago’s sanctuary politicians to commit to not releasing this criminal illegal alien from jail back into American neighborhoods,” Bis said.
No motive has been given for the shooting, which a New York state lawmaker has slammed as evidence of America’s “clearly broken” immigration system.
“Our immigration system is clearly broken and endangering innocent American citizens. No one should be a victim of a system that fails on multiple levels,” State Assemblyman Matt Slater (R-Yorktown) told The Post.
Gorman and friends went out to the Main at Tobey Prinz Beach in the wee hours to try to catch a glimpse of the northern lights, her family said.
That’s when a masked gunman “emerged from the shadows,” according to a police report.
The investigation remains open.

We should make it so you can successfully sue the city for all damages when they do that.

Loyola’s student newspaper issues apology over Sheridan Gorman story — for correctly calling alleged killer an ‘illegal immigrant’ (should have been 'alien', not 'immigrant', btw)
Loyola University Chicago’s student newspaper is facing backlash for apologizing for its coverage of freshman Sheridan Gorman’s murder — because editors labeled the alleged murderer an “illegal immigrant.”
The Loyola Phoenix originally reported — accurately — on accused killer Jose Medina-Medina‘s status as an illegal alien after he was charged on Monday with the execution of 18-year-old Gorman.
“Immigrant man charged in murder of Sheridan Gorman, DHS involved,” the student paper’s headline originally read, referring to Venezuelan national Medina-Medina, 25, as an “illegal immigrant.”
But the Phoenix later edited its story to describe Medina-Medina as a “Rogers Park Resident,” in reference to the Chicago neighborhood where Loyola’s main campus is located — and where Gorman was walking with friends when she was shot dead early Thursday.
“That headline didn’t reflect the most important elements in the story, and it was taken down minutes later to prevent any further harm to affected community members,” the newspaper said in a lengthy editor’s note on the article.
“Additionally, in the body of the original post, we described the man who was charged as an ‘illegal immigrant,’ using language provided by the Department of Homeland Security. That language does not align with Associated Press style, nor does it align with the values of this newspaper,” the editor’s note continued.
“No human’s existence is illegal, and we quickly changed our wording to reflect that,” the student newspaper wrote, despite noting in its article that Medina-Medina “was living in the United States illegally,” according to the DHS.
The college newspaper’s U-turn has sparked a furious response from many.
“If I were her parents this would send me over the edge!” one X user wrote.
“No dystopian could conjure the college-aged left as they are now. They surpass parody,” wrote another X user.
“Apologizing to murderers. How typically woke,” added a third X user.
The Loyola Phoenix did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
Woke Dems in Chicago have been accused of rushing to excuse Gorman’s alleged killer of culpability for the murder.
Chicago Alderwoman Maria Hadden was slammed for suggesting on Monday that Gorman was “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” even claiming outrageously that Medina-Medina may have been “startled” when he allegedly shot the teenager.
Gorman was reportedly masked at the time when he allegedly approached her and her friends and shot her in the head while the group walked along the Chicago lakefront.
Hadden, a progressive ally of Chicago’s mayor, apologized on Tuesday evening, before blaming the “conservative media” for “misconstruing” her words.
On Tuesday, Mayor Brandon Johnson refused to apologize to Gorman’s parents for promoting sanctuary city policies, which allowed Medina-Medina to be in Chicago at the time.
The White House has blamed border and sanctuary policies in sanctuary cities such as Chicago for the murder of Gorman.
Medina-Medina was allegedly previously stopped at the border in 2023 but released twice under President Joe Biden’s administration.
“A preventable tragedy. Sheridan Gorman was murdered by an illegal alien released into the U.S. in 2023 under the Biden administration — a direct result of failed border & sanctuary city policies,” the White House said in a post on X on Tuesday.
“The Trump Admin is working hard to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. Prayers are with her loved ones,” the post concluded.
Gorman’s parents, from Yorktown Heights, New York, paid a heart-rending tribute to their daughter on Sunday.
Grieving mother Jessica Gorman vowed to get “justice” for her daughter as she spoke to The Post on Monday.
