Question: What constitutes and original file, and how can you identify the original version of a computer file?

attributes can be spoofed so there's no real way to identify the original version of a computer file.

Maybe a block chain thing? What were those cartoons they were selling, etfs?
But what if they had a productive use?

On any standard operating systems these days, you can't.  They aren't meant to be forensically reliable.  The metadata is limited and can be overwritten with admin rights.  Yes, if you were registering documents with a blockchain or something like that (us copyright office in the old days) then you can prove an original file.  As far as I know, even existing journaling file systems don't go that far.

This came up when publishing on YouTube and I had some backing music I had made myself, and they wanted me to confirm that the music was my original work.
Flash forward and there is the need to labels like DistroKid to have music be published, so credit can be assigned in the material as reference to the publisher’s site (distro) which handles the ASCAP registrations, or BMI or whatever they do.

Otherwise, others will lay copyright claims. And they still probably will try anyway.

Re: Question: What constitutes and original file, and how can you identify the original version of a computer file?

There is nothing in a standard Windows file that can establish that something is an original. You can easily establish if two files are different at the byte level even if they do not appear (or sound) different.

One option that doesn't involve block chain is a simple PKI signed document archive. You can do that with something like PGP. It can incorporate things like dates or other metadata. That would almost certainly be enough in most cases. For an extra layer of assurance, you could upload it to a third-party storage provider that would timestamp when it was uploaded. Since you don't control that you now have a strong evidentiary base. Finally, there are online watermarking / escrow services available as well. You will have to pay, but the costs should be trivial.

Thank you for that information.
