Why the holy fuq would someone NOT apply for unemployment?  Even if it’s only a few hundred dollars a week it’s that much less of your savings that you’re burning.

Oh well, I’ve always said that most people are fuqing idiots, which is why it’s so easy to compete and win in our society.

Unemployment means you had a job for a period of time. Many of your precious negroes and assorted diversity filth never need to bother with that, as your welfare state provides nicely for them.

Their severance package counts against unemployment.

It's not welfare.  You actually paid into for many years.  You have to be a total moron to not collect it if you've recently become unemployed.

Not in California… and even in states where it does, it generally only applies to people getting continuing severance payments, not a one time lump sum

The 75% who don't file are going to become the 95% who don't file. When your replacement is a $20/month subscription that writes better code than you do, there's a psychological barrier to walking into the unemployment office. Pride keeps people broke. Meanwhile Oracle fires 30,000, re-allocates the budget to GPU clusters, and the clusters don't need dental insurance. The severance debate is cute but it's rearranging deck chairs. The real question is what happens when 'apply for unemployment' becomes the dominant career path for CS grads.
