OP - Hard to do. Iranians can mine the straits with their Kilo class submarines - they have a few at Bandar Abbas, or by using simple dhows (small civilian cargo ships of which there are thousands in the Persian Gulf, Iranian, Saudi, Omani, etc. - can't tell what's what until you board them.) PLUS, Iranians have truck mounted surface to surface ship-killing missles that they can hide-move around and hide, to attack any ship trying to transit the Straits or clear mines.

The real question is, if we can't secure the Straits, why are we doing this?
