It’s impossible to see that movie and not absolutely love JD Vance (I knoa it was a book first but Americans can’t read/ AFAIK the movie represented the book well thanks to Ron Howard)

Glenn Close was amazing playing his hard ass mean ass criminal ass grandma.

Drugs, poverty, domestic abuse vs the absolute snobbery of Yale to a poor huckleberry from Appalachia.

JD did it by being smart as shyt with no DEI gimmedats or affirmative action, being saddled with the sin of pasty white skin & blue eyes and huge head. The scene with JD in the high school math class where the teacher breezily told the class to get a graphing calculator for class made my heart sink sad I remember that feeling, being asked to get an expensive item with no home support, with no way to continue the class without it. Brutal and could have been the end of JD Vance’s math classes if not for his mean-ass grandma.

What saved JD from the woke world (and this is hinted at in the movie) was his absolute disgusting mess of a mother blubbered a couple times about once upon a time in high school she was #2 in the class. She had a superior mind and passed this on to JD. BFD considering she was a crackhead whore, but a little poignant to me personally because in my rural high school in the ‘80s I remember a couple of kids from the poor side of the county with sketchy families somehow inexplicably being “good” at math classes, and allowed to be in the advanced math classes with NO EXTRA BONUS HELP, and they quietly kept up. Nobody said anything, they were almost always very shy & quiet, it seemed like a fluke considering their derelict siblings & family & cousins they didn’t exactly disown, but didn’t exactly embrace either. They had NO money and no advantages whatsoever, were likely mortified, were not celebrated much or condemned, just kinda existed and slipped into the advanced math classes like some kind of autists out of left field with natural abilities they used sheepishly, Allowed to “stay” since they could actually keep up (no IEPs or social justice extra credit, it was sink or swim). No need for fancy $$$ computers or working WiFi or a stable address on a sober household, all that counted is they could keep track of the math textbook everyone else got to use for the year, could manage to write down the (extensive) homework assignments and actually do them, turn them in completed without their deadbeat parents barfing on them or burning the homework with cigarettes or crackpipe, and finding a way to show up at school & take the tests on time. These lost kids didn’t really get credit for the extra hoops to jump through but never complained, hid their family problems. A lot of them had to work nights and manage the homework after hours. They didn’t play sports (no money or family support whatsoever), skinny like they missed meals. Sometimes they smelled and/or looked greasy, were probably either neglected or homeless or caught up in family dysfunction they could not avoid.
The other smart kids in these “advanced” math classes doing well didn’t see these outliers as being a threat because they weren’t going to be competition for the usual college applications to better colleges, these poor kids who somehow have the brain power to keep up not only had sleazy families but also sleazy boyfriends or girlfriends, seemed perplexed by the college application game, and going to community college seemed daunting anyway.

This was JDs mom 100% and it was 169% downhill after high school, scum boyfriend, no money, disinterested parents in crisis, and all she had left was a memory of keeping up with the smart “rich” kids who moved on to colleges & beyond.

The other heartbreaking scene was a struggling JD in college trying to get his junkie mother out of a sleazy hotel and getting her a (hard to get) bed in rehab. When he did get there & tried to check her in, his maxed out credit cards got rejected one by one as he sweated it out, on an academic deadline nobody gave a shyt about. Horrible feeling.
It’s an absolute miracle he got admission to Yale Law School. Maybe it was an odd form of DEI, undocumented and done as a folly of sorts or school joke to see how some hillbilly could amuse them with a backward accent.
I remember these oddly smart poor kids, none of them ever got past high school and probably got swallowed up in bitterness, abuse or worse and kind of disappeared.

I went to college at a state u that had extremely advanced genius areas as wealthy as can be geographically, while at the same time some backwater serious isolated hellhole dead end areas as poor as can be. Dirt poor whytes & billionaire whytes in one state. The poor ones spoke in such a deep regional backward accent they were nearly unintelligible.

This was before the internet when people everywhere became more aware, regional dialects have disappeared.
