What's your definition of spic? He was from Portugal, and came to the US originally to attend grad school.

Hispanic literally means "from Spain". Spain is a country in Europe, and Portugal is another. They don't share a language.
It sounds like you don't remember a lot from middle school.

Yes, "Hispanic" generally refers to people with ancestry from Spanish-speaking countries, focusing on language and culture from Spain and Spanish-speaking Latin America, but it's nuanced as it includes Spain (not Latin American) and excludes non-Spanish Latin countries like Brazil, while "Latino" is about Latin American geography, so they aren't perfectly interchangeable. It's an ethnic, not racial, term and encompasses various races and origins from those regions.

I'm not really that nuanced with my racism.

Meh, Portugese - real Portugese - aren't spics as the term is understood in the US.
He was, however, an immigrant that shouldn't have been here.

I don't really care, they're all spic trash. Yes I agree he should not have been here.

Hispanic is applied to every Latin American country and Portuguese is a Spanish dialect. If you can understand one you can understand the other.
