I'm guessing Generac, and it's probably as illegal as hell to bring it into California.

how long can something like that run?
how much power does it supply? enough to run appliances like a refrigerator or hot water heater? will internet still work in a power outage?

I just started representing Kohler for my state.
I have a generac in my back yard.
One is way, way better than the other in terms of quality, parts, price, and in pretty much every spec.
Kohler

Can you use propane generators instead? Propane seems like a good alternative.

In my opinion, gasoline is easier to obtain in an emergency. But California is nuts. My Honda generator, bought 15 years ago in CA with full CARB certification, is now ILLEGAL for me to ever return to CA with.
Gas is evil to them. Propane, no better. Pay BIG for required CARB certification. Battery power with Solar charging may still be OK. CA is NUTS.

It's just gas, the other fuel options are useless to me. This one might be ok in california, doesn'tmatter to me either.

This one have 8k watts to run and 10k starting watts.
It'll run about 10 hours on 8 gallons of gas at half power. So the fridge, lights, computer, heater, microwave. A whole house worth but it's not as expensive as a dedicated whole house unit. It's costs a lot more to have a transfer switch to run their whole house from it.
The longest outage I've had has been 2 days total. This can also be used to power my welder, a power washer, or other tools & equipment.
I'm thinking about a battery array and an inverter to store excess power. Or maybe some solar to add on.

I'm long gone from CA, but still have 2 kids there. The same Honda generator is for sale here in BOISE, but I can't give one to them.

Have you used your generators very much, Tom? What do you use them for?

Samples_BoiIf you live in an area where you might need a generator, you live in a shythoal.

Only take as a few hours to ruin $400 worth of groceries.
if you live where you can't run a generator while a herd of deer fuq around in the snow, wtf?

Not much now. The big one was for home and the smaller one was for camping.
They haven't been used at all since we got here. Our total home "OUT" time has been about 2 minutes since we got here, and no generator while camping. Back in SF, it was used AT LEAST once per year, and HAD to be ready for a major earthquake at any time.

How often do you cycle a generator to test it?

You can buy and use a new gas generator in California, any Home Depot in the state has a whole aisle of them.
