Lately, about 50% of McDonalds I've been in have the publicly accessible drink stations removed.

I wonder where that is, it's not around here.
For some reason a few have gotten rid of their ketchup stations and are back to packets. I can't see how that saves money. Packets are really expensive compared to bulk ketchup. A long time ago I worked for a restaurant and I saw the delivery invoices with prices.
I wonder if Wendy's is going to go the same way after installing all those fancy machines. If I want a small hamburger, I prefer Wendy's anyway.

Midwest - I'm more likely to go into a McDonalds when traveling, either looking for a soda or maybe breakfast.

SamplesBoiMcDonalds getting rid of ketchup stations and soda stations are basically going against what their customers want. If other places do this they are putting themselves at a disadvantage. Their only real saving grace is children really love McNuggets. But even that is offset with getting rid of all those playpens.

Tom LeykisI don't go often, but the drink and ketchup dispensers are just fine in BOISE. BUT, if I'm in the East Bay, I'm heading for CASPER'S, not McDonald's!

You sure think about children a lot for a single man in his late 40s or early 50s.

Less of a factor than you're hoping - I'm going to guess that 95%+ of McDonalds I end up in are in suburbs/exurbs/cletusville. One or two of those might have been in a town with a substantial minority population.

The ones in New England - the good parts, the white parts - have refills.

SamplesBoiI was in a Ghetto McD's once and they actually had a public soda machine, which is pretty rare, and Grape Soda was available. Go figure.
It was in St. Louis, I think. Chicago McD's don't have the public facing soda machines and do not put out napkins or ketchup. I wonder why.
