The fallout from that UPS MD-11 crash is getting interesting.

Shortly after the crash the FAA grounded all the other MD-11s - now they have grounded all the remaining DC-10s and the USAFs KC-10s too.  Suggests they found Something Really Fuqing Bad (tm) in the way the engine pylons work.

It's always been a problem:

Yeah, but they ended up blaming that on "improper engine installation methods" - and it looks like it was really just a shyt design all along.

I'm waiting for shlomo to give us the definitive answer.

I am surprised the Trump administration has not blamed this on trans people and DEI yet.

I thought that was the root cause of everything wrong in the universe. And only tax cuts and banning abortions could resolve it.

Surely we should be asking OLG? Anyone that can manage to fly a heavy into an airport with a 100000 pound MTOW obviously has some crazy pilot skills.

My super liberal houseguests immediately blamed Trump and the new transportation secretary for the crash

They are grounding them presumably for inspection.  I expect the ones that pass inspection will get back into service very soon.

I expect none to pass or ever get valid airworthiness certs again. They are scrap.

Sure.   That makes total sense.  Hundreds of these aircraft and all of them are going to show failure on the pylons despite this failure being exceedingly rare and many of them having just passed inspection.

You're an idiot.  Remember that.

Sure, It's only a couple of boo-boos that affected those specific airframes causing only a handful of deaths.

For that crash, I thought American's mechanics didn't follow the defined process to remount the engine.

Re: The fallout from that UPS MD-11 crash is getting interesting.

There was the Turkish Airlines incident.  Maybe for that crash, the cargo door was at fault.

There's also Sioux City, Iowa, where the aft engine on a United DC-10 blew apart.

You're too young to remember when the airlines were displaying "DC-10" next to their departure list, becuase of these crashes.

The DC-10 was a time-to-market design.

The L-1011 had problems with the Rolls-Royce engines used on that plane.  Those probelms almost bankrupted Rolls-Royce.

Re: The fallout from that UPS MD-11 crash is getting interesting.

Old planes start falling apart at the seams, but the culture is to just keep them rolling because statistically, they aren't likely to crash.

Patching aging aircraft with aluminum foil may be common, but it's not a real fix, when they have critical airfoils that need reworking.

So flying nearly empty aircraft all over constantly might be more efficient on paper, but the business model and maintenance models are out of sync. Aluminum craft in atmosphere have a finite lifespans before structural integrity is compromised. And other bullshyt I'm making up as I go.

I always thought the Tristar was a nicer aircraft. It was also the first plane to get CAT IIIc (zero visibility) autoland approval, although AFAIK it was only ever operated in CAT IIIb.  The RB211 was probably too ambitious for its own good - or at the very least was a victim of wildly optimistic scheduling.

Trans people didnt exist when these planes were built.
They were an Obama creation.
