You have to tell boss (for approval) and HR (for PTO) when you are leaving and coming back, but of course, are under no obligation to discuss any other aspect of the trip.
But of course, I always want to make themb jelly, so I tell them where I am going.

I used to fly from San Jose to Florida for vacation. At the time, the round trip was only $250 & Florida was far enough to keep them from dragging me back to work.
