.40 offers controllability and knockdown power. I understand this is about a perfect combo of both.

I prefer a .45 but great choice anyway, the 870 or a Mossberg 590 in 20 or 12GA is also nice home defense gun, enjoy your God given rights to protect yourself.

It's a pretty decent compromise round.. Besides, you can get a lot of rounds of it in a std mag. More than say a .45

* Mod 870 w/18: barrel in 12 ga dispensing 00 buck? CHECK
* REAL Springfield Armory M1A w/synth stock, chambered in good old .308, not some wimpy Mini14/.223? CHECK.

BTW, whoever gave the advice to pick up a Gamo Big Cat 1200, the other day, that was a solid tip! I got one and damn, it is accurate, solid, well-built and equipped (fluted barrel, two stage trigger, rubber recoil pad, synth stock, 4X scope, etc.), and it is finally an air rifle I would trust to take out a small varmint. I can;t even use my pellet trap, too much velocity/power, even with wadcutters, not to mention the special ammo they include that takes it up to 1200 FPS!
