Latest Project: Implementing The AS5040 10-bit rotary position sensor with digital angle (interface), ABI, UVW and PWM output

They sampled me 3 of these for free!

canada

The display shows the absolute position 0-1023 of the diametrically magnetized magnet above it.

Doesn't display in degrees, radians and grads.

One rotation is a 10 bit number, 1024 gradations.  Obviously, any of these can be trivially calculated out of that.  I didn't want to have to use a more complex display so I am just displaying the serial output of the absolute angle of the magnet as far as the AS5040 is concerned.

Its too bad you didn't enter the "Build a Tricorder" contest.

You could be pocketing $7 million.

I saw that.  I am an amateur, I don't think I would be competitive.  Plus, I have no idea how to use these sensors to diagnose disease.  That requires some serious cross-industry expertise.  If I had an MD plus a PhD in EE or equivalent experience, maybe I could come up with a good idea... :)

So basically you built something that doesn't do jack shyt. The way you've been making yourself out to be this electronics ninja for the last year I was expecting something a little more impressive than 8th grade science fair junk.

I don't have any heavy duty machinery with shafts that I need to position-sense right now.  I'll get back to you when I implement this into something more serious like a jet turbine.

He claimed to have written a USB driver once and it turned out that he just populated a few variables in a pre made Visual Studio project and hit compile.

snicker

rolleyes So in other words you're a piddler, not a creator or a problem solver. Real impressive.

Look ma, I speled my name wif a seven segment display!

By the way, if you're going to build pointless shyt for no reason, go buy a solderless breadboard. It will take less time and you'll look like less of an idiot.

Re: Latest Project: Implementing The AS5040 10-bit rotary position sensor with digital angle (interface), ABI, UVW and PWM output

I use breadboards all the time for non-permanent stuff, for example, when I don't understand a pinout or I want to see how bright an LED is with a certain amount of current.  This is permanent because I may have applications for the part later and I want to be able to get it back into testability in 10 seconds rather than an hour or so.

Spanky's the same way with Elkins' code. He added a few wrappers and copied the functionality of some functions to create his own "from scratch" and viola, he invents a bbs!

I didn't know that about Spanky, but using example code is pretty damn common in the industry.  You flesh it out to your own requirements.

Register a professional email address with AMS and when they ask for your application write something like "rotary shaft position and rotational speed sensing in industrial manufacturing applications" and say 5K units a year and it's a new project you are starting immediately.  Works like a charm.
