Obama GM Chevy Volt: Did we say 230 mpg? We meant 23 mpg AND its a hybrid

Let's see what they've found out. Popular Mechanics saw just 37.5 MPG in city driving. Car and Driver apparently didn't choose to use their wheel time for any city driving ? but found with all-electric driving:

"...getting on the nearest highway and commuting with the 80-mph flow of traffic-basically the worst-case scenario-yielded 26 miles; a fairly spirited back-road loop netted 31; and a carefully modulated cruise below 60 mph pushed the figure into the upper 30s."

Motor Trend, like the rest of the trade press other than Popular Mechanics, didn't appear to do any testing in city conditions, but did find that:

"Without any plugging in, [a weeklong trip to Grandma's house] should return fuel economy in the high 30s to low 40s."

They also parrot GM's new line of 25-50 miles of all-electric ? a far cry from the 230 MPG they originally marketed ? that the "Volt provides 25-50 miles of real-world electric operation no matter how hard you flog it."

But while even providing only 10% of the fuel economy initially touted, these more real-world figures are merely an exaggeration. The bigger problem is that, as Mr. Oldham now claims, is that GM lied to them about the powertrain.

Just clicked on the popular mechanics link, looks like you'd never use any gas ever if you were making a 10 mile commute.

wow, just click on the popular mechanics and motortrend links from the original article.  It is safe to say that this business insider writer is pretty much a completely dishonest person.

In other news, the 2011 Jetta TDI will come fully loaded at around $25k when it's release later this year and will get an honest 42mpg on the highway.  Higher numbers have been reported.  Plus you can brew your own go juice if you're so inclined.

Hybrids get too much press.  There's more economical vehicles available that are just as efficient and allow you to actualize your ROI much sooner.

Uh, the only way it wouldn't be a hybrid is if it were ONLY electric, dumbass.

It's mainly a plug in. Can you plug-in your Prius? No. So it is definitely DIFFERENT than a Prius.

The 230 MPG was based on average car use. So if you drive 60 miles a day with 2 charges, you can get 230 MPG.

The idea is that with a range of 25 miles, most people will never use the gas in the tank. So basically it could be infinite MPG.

Will the new TDi really be $25k?  That would be a deal.

Me?  I'm thinking early 1980s Mercedes 300SD fully restored.  35mpg highway in a humongous vehicle.

Though, once again, if you only use your volt for a 30 m city commute, you might never use gas.

The base Jetta dropped from $20k to $15,995.  Fully loaded 2010 TDIs are mid 26ish and people expect the '11 to follow suit as Volkswagen makes a play for more market share.

'85 or '86 are the ideal years for the 300 TDs because they were the pinnacle of pre-electronic diesel technology.  Being eyeing them myself as a WVO project, but the missus and I scouted the VWs this weekend and liked what we saw.

Edit: the 2011 Jetta is also 3" longer than the previous model and in dash GPS is now optional.  I believe that the manual tranny is gone in the TDI, though.

I just finished a training series for VW on the all-new Jetta. It is one very nice car. I logged quite a bit of wheel time since early May and it will give the competition fits.

The Leaf is all electric, there is the difference, you don't have an option to go to gas if need be.

Volt is what the Soviets would have produced in 2010. If Soviet Union still existed.

I live in Northen Illinois, most likely the most nuclear powered part of the USA.  (Zion, Byron, Braidwood, LaSalle, Dresden) I've posted before, and you can search it, that I wish the stimulus had been to build 100 nuclear power plants.

This comment from the original article is the main point...  The author of the original article had no idea what he was talking about, showing no understanding of the words "electric" "hybrid" "mph" and "say"

No,

You want '85 or earlier MB Diesels.

Why?

In '86 they went to aluminum heads.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W126

A 3.0-litre inline-five cylinder turbo diesel was offered from 1981?1985 in North America. They are known for covering many hundreds of thousands of miles with few problems.

I've done my research.  A '84 300SD with about 175k miles will run me about $3500.  Then I put another few $k into 'blueprinting' everything.  Drive it to 500k miles.

You've not spent much time fixing them..

The vaccuum door locks, the leaking seals, etc..  MBZ parts are expensive, even for old cars...

Nah, I'll take a Toyota

What's it going to cost? 30K 40K?

Why would anybody buy an underpowered shyt box when you could get a luxury car?

Don't say the environment.  This is GM.  You know in 10 years we'll all find out the batteries are made of hyper lead or some shyt.

You could be right about the 1986 model being less than ideal.

My research led me to think that the '80-'82 300 Series were prone to rust issues and were hard to find in good condition.  I could be mistaken.
