CHICAGO (WLS) - A Las Vegas rally co-hosted by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid last week was supposed to be focused on clean-energy but saw the Nevada Democrat and his entourage transported by a fleet of gas-guzzling SUVs.

More than 40 people rallied outside the rain-soaked event at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas' Thomas & Mack Center, with some wearing green hard hats and waving signs that equated clean energy with green jobs.

According to a Heartland Institute report, the protesters either didn't understand or weren't told that the Summit speakers supported their concerns.

To alleviate the situation, Reid rushed out to inform the group he shared their viewpoint. But rather than walk the approximate 100 yards of mostly empty parking lot to where the protesters had gathered, Reid and his aides were transported by a caravan of SUVs.

After assuaging the protesters worries, Reid jumped back into the awaiting SUVs and returned to the Thomas & Mack Center.

The rally was the third in series of national clean-energy summit meetings.

Other scheduled participants included U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Thomas Donahue and Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens.
