How many kWh of energy does it take to completely fill the 600-liter layout of the rocket variant to maximum pressure?

To completely fill the 600-liter layout of the Rocket variant to its maximum pressure of 10,000 psi, it takes an estimated 75 to 150 kWh of energy, depending heavily on the efficiency and speed of the compression system used.

The Breakdown

Theoretical Minimum (Isothermal Compression): ~75 kWh

If you compress the ambient air perfectly slow enough so that no heat is wasted (isothermal compression), the pure thermodynamic work required to pack air into a 600-liter space at 10,000 psi (~689 bar) is 74.95 kWh.

Real-World Estimates (Compressor Losses): ~115 to 150 kWh

In reality, compressing air to ultra-high pressures creates massive amounts of heat. High-pressure compressors use multiple stages and active intercooling to manage this heat, which drops electrical efficiency down to roughly 50% to 65%.

What This Means for the Car

To put this into perspective, the base model of the new Tesla Roadster is expected to feature a massive 200 kWh battery pack.

Refilling the full 600-liter dual-tank setup on the go using an onboard compressor would consume anywhere from 37% to 75% of the car's entire battery capacity just for a single refill.

This enormous energy drain explains why the prototype currently relies on stationary external nitrogen stations rather than draining its own battery pack to run an onboard compressor.

Giant battery packs are a bust.

Wrong.  And in a pinch you can use it to treat your schizophrenia.

Is it self-driving?  Because Musk has been promising self-driving every year for more than ten years.  So maybe don't count on being able to buy a rocket car.

His cars are actually pretty damn close right now.  Better than any other manufacturer on almost all roads.  Just not good enough to get into the back seat yet.  Waymo does exceed Tesla in a few markets they have mapped to the millimeter and with about 10x the optical hardware on their cars.

Elmo has less than 20 autonomous cars, all operating in tiny geofenced areas.  Waymo AVs are racking up more miles per day than Tesla has accumulated since day 1.

It would make more sense to make it nuclear/steam powered.

7k lb batteries on a flying car. snicker

The flying car is a very light weight special, no battery pack and the 600 liter pressure tank takes up half the interior.
