Yes, but the endearing part is the kids’ band sounded and looked like absolute shyt, and the scamming Music Man winced in horror thinking he was about to be lynched by the town for having such a shytty outcome.
But the townspeople didn’t see & hear the shyt, to their ears and eyes it was a magnificent orchestra dressed in the finest regalia. They cried with joy and celebrated the Music Man as a genius conductor.
The final scenes have the shyt band sounding & looking fit for royalty.

I think where the American excellence comes into play is the fact that in the end the townspeople actually felt GOOD about being ripped the fuq off.
