Some Salvadorans had hoped the rapport between Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and US President Donald Trump could pave the way for a reprieve, even as administration officials have revoked deportation protections for many other nationalities.

But the Department of Homeland Security hasn’t yet made an announcement on TPS for El Salvador. And on Wednesday, which had been the scheduled ending date for Salvadorans’ protections, a written statement from a DHS spokesperson provided few answers.

“An announcement on El Salvador’s TPS will be made at the appropriate time,” the spokesperson said. “Until such announcement is made, Salvadoran individuals present in the U.S. under TPS retain protection.”

Guidance posted on the US Citizenship and Immigration Services website Wednesday said work authorization will also be extended until an announcement is made. But how long these protections will last remains unclear.

Salvadorans who spoke recently with CNN en Español said they’re increasingly concerned their days in the US could be numbered.

Some Salvadorans hoped their president would step in.
A June Supreme Court decision cleared the way for the Trump administration to end TPS for hundreds of thousands of people.
Administration officials have consistently criticized TPS and touted their efforts to strip the deportation protections they argue had become a de facto amnesty program for undocumented immigrants that was never intended by Congress. So far, under the second Trump administration, officials have revoked TPS for most immigrants who had it, terminating protections for 13 countries. As of mid-August, the protections remained in place for just four countries, including El Salvador, according to a recent Pew Research Center analysis.

The D.C. area has more Salvadorans with TPS than any other part of the U.S., a report found. "Can you imagine what will happen to my family?" one man asked.

"My family was very poor, so I didn’t have the opportunity to study. So I decided to look for a friend who would help me and come here to the United States in search of a better future," said the man, who goes by the pseudonym José to protect his identity.
Over the years he got married, had five children, and was able to receive the benefits of Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
However, he now says he is worried about the end of his immigration protection on Wednesday, Sept. 9—benefits he has relied on for 25 years.
"Now everything is collapsing for us, and I think we’ll be worse off than when I first came — because when I came, I didn’t have my children," he said. "Can you imagine what will happen to my family? I’m their provider."

When that designation expired in 1992, President George H. W. Bush granted Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for 12 months to the approximately 150,000 Salvadorans covered by that immigration protection. President Bill Clinton later extended that DED grant for another 18 months before allowing it to expire at the end of 1994.”

This was when they were still grateful. They couldn’t believe their lucky stars that their temporary visit in 1990 had been extended into 1994 by 2 different presidents, even though word from home said the earthquake whatever was over.
