If you have kids I can see it - it's a fun activity for them. Otherwise - I can get literally everything at home. Not going to waste time or money going to a theater.

I saw masters of the universe a few weeks ago. It was not terrible. I went at an off time though so the theater was practically empty and tickets were half price.

I like staying home and watching movies while eating one of my special pizzas I make for less than $3! Why waste money on fancy ingredients like pasta sauce or expensive cheese or dough? Ketchup on day old bread with some melted Velveeta is num-num!

you waste money on ketchup and day old bread? Dude you can get free ketchup packs at fast food restaurants and get old bread out of the dumpster each night. WAYSA?

I stopped watching all TV sports, TV shows, movies.
It's all time-wasting cultural marxist garbage anyway.
........................................................................
Phillip_McCavityI can make better popcorn at home.
I can see better movies at home.
The theater gives me a better sound system, but I can't choose the volume.

Miserable.

ThePerfectStormIf you don't counting taking kids to a Saturday matinee, i haven't been since 2000.

SockpuppetI used to go at least monthly. But last went for Barbie.
I still like the experience. I don’t care about the money. But two issues stop me now.
1. The primary issue is that the theaters in this area have all switched to “recliner” seating. I do not fit comfortably. I prefer the older style seats where the arms went up and then I was comfortable in 1.5 seats.
2. The number of movies I want to see in the theater is really small now. They just don’t make the kinds of movies I tend to like anymore. I like artsy movies and dramas. The kinds of movies that win academy awards. Everything now is a superhero movie, an action movie, the 17th sequel, or all of the above. I watch very few of those.

It's a group of cultural ideas that have become thier own thing. The idea of ging out for an evening, of beign entertained, of enjoying a group activity in your community. Of being amazed by bigger than life technlogy.
Now all of these ideas are addressed or have been outmoded by cultural shifts.
I have good sound and picture at home, no neighbors acting out, I don't have to travel, Not dating or taking Kids to their version of Star Wars circa 1978. Costs a fraction of the price for a little patience. When that ticket is $24 and the snacks another $40. I'm starting to think Hollywood has inflated itself out of business because I don't see the 100 million dollar budgets on the screen.

You clearly have internet access.
And the internet has unlimited free content from around the world.
And it's all ad-free, if you use Firefox & "uBlock Origin".

I suspect the push toward superhero and cartoon based action movies is as I noted - if you don't have kids you don't have a lot of incentive to go - hence your market is small. Streaming, large screen TV's, and movie theater level sound quality at home have completely changed the game.
For kids it's a fun experience. For me it's a waste of time/money and I don't care about the social experience, sticky floors, and smelly seats - just to pretend that for a moment in time - I'm part of some "club" that all share the same fandom of Star Wars or whatever.

I am pretty sure I have a top 5% home theater system, but it still does not compare to a movie theater.
I also like the movie snacks. I don't care how much they cost.
