My IT friend from the Bay Area came by to visit me, and I made him watch the movie HACKERS (1995)

Halfway through watching it, he was stone cold silent.  I thought he was bored, so I pressed the pause button and asked him if he was bored or not.  He said that he worked in the IT industry all my life.  So whenever he would watch a movie or TV show about computers, he always felt that the script writers insulted his intelligence by depicting things that are technically improbable in the world of IT.  He said that the movie WarGames was simply outdated and unlrealistic pap, he walked out on "The Net" and that he was infuriated by the ridiculous computer virus plot line from Independence Day.

But of HACKERS, he said that he was almost moved to tears, and that the bad rap the movie gets is largely undeserved.  To him, it was obvious that the producers hired several IT consultants in order make sure that the script was as real and as close to IT culture as possible. Finally, someone in Hollywood took the time and effort to make a film about computers, and they made it for people just like him.

He was also pleasantly surprised at the manner of speech and dress that the hackers employed, which is quite close to his every day experiences when he's hanging out with other hackers.

He also said that the people who criticize this movie most likely know very little about computers. And those who claim to be hackers themselves who dismiss the movie, they are simply just not skilled enough in computers to understand what is going on. To watch this movie and fully understand how the hacking is being performed, you need to be fairly versed in computers, far better than the average techie who works in a call center as far as he's concerned.

When he returned to the Bay Area, he organized a movie night with his co-workers.  Even his boss went to his place and congratulated him for making him watch it.  At the end of the movie, they stood up and gave him a round of applause.  His manager also gave him a complimentary raise.

At the end of the movie's viewing with my friend, he uttered these words:

"This is the most authentic movie about computers I have ever seen."
