In a strange twist of fate, the next tropical storm to form in the Atlantic this year is expected to share the first name of beloved country music singer Dolly Parton, who died on Tuesday.
The National Hurricane Center released its names for the hurricane season well in advance. Names are used every six years, unless they’re retired because a storm causes significant damage or loss of life. The list of names for storms in 2026 was previously used in 2020, with the exclusion of Laura. (The list of every name available for use until 2031 is publicly available.)

The most recent storm to be named this year was Tropical Storm Cristobal, which formed on August 12 and dissipated the next day. That means the next storm to earn a name, based on the predetermined list, is “Dolly.”
It could happen soon, too. As of Tuesday, there are two tropical disturbances being tracked in the Atlantic.
