Ukraine teaches U.S. “War Department” a lesson: The obsolescent U.S. Army would get annhilated in a modern conflict
U.S. Army forces received a harsh lesson in modern drone warfare during a major exercise in Germany last spring, where experienced Ukrainian operators repeatedly found and knocked out American armored units, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.
During the Combined Resolve exercise, Ukrainian troops from the 412th Regiment of Unmanned Systems Forces used reconnaissance, explosive-dropping and first-person-view drones against U.S. forces. About 3,500 U.S. personnel, primarily from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, participated.
American armored vehicles proved particularly vulnerable. Their movement kicked up dust that made them easier to detect from the air. Ukrainian reconnaissance drones located the vehicles before attack drones moved in for simulated kills.
The Ukrainians eliminated U.S. vehicles so rapidly that some had to be returned to the exercise, effectively “re-spawned,” to keep the scenario running.

the Cossacks wouldn’t have time to react or survive a serious mobile attack like Patton, Sherman or Grant pioneered. Yes there would have been losses, but the war would have ended in two weeks.

Why do you think we are hanging back in Iran? Iran has done no significant damage to us compared tow what we have done to them because our strategy is pretty smart. They are using drones against other sand naggers only. Let them.
Inexpensive drones can't really take on flying aircraft, they are just not that good. I don't think even the high end ones can unless they also have very high end air to air missiles, and against something like an F-35 even that is probably never going to work.
Drones are getting very good at taking on armor and infantry. But we don't necessarily have to use those to dominate an enemy anyway.
Two can play at this game, of course, and we are going to play. I think there will be some defenses against drones as well. They just aren't able to become invisible to radar. We are going to see things like low-altitude radar "AWACS drones" for smaller units and the hunter and killer drones to go after incoming drones and ground based short range guns to attack them. It's going to be fun to see all the counter-counter-counter shyt that is coming. Lucky Palmer is going to make a mint on these smaller systems because they are going to need to be fairly cheap and that is his wheelhouse.
I agree that drones mostly benefit the defender, especially in certain ways. I think the world knows China isn't going to be able to take Taiwan by force now. They can rain terror on it, but attempting to land boats is going to be suicide for those men.

A couple of things:
1) The US has not really had to fight a drone capable opponent thank god
2) The US is not going to just ignore drones. We already have a small army of contractors in Ukraine learning everything we can about how to fight with drones

Uh huh… that’s why the U.S. has evacuated soldiers and sailors from every base within a thousand miles of Iran and pulled their planes all the way back to Israel.
