Summary
U.S. government debt has surged, with total outstanding set to hit $40 trillion this year, doubling in just nine years.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act raised the debt ceiling by $5 trillion, enabling a $3.1 trillion increase in new Treasury borrowing within a year.
Interest expense on government debt has soared to a record $1.2 trillion annualized, now the second-largest budget item after Social Security.*
