Certainly having a good car is important. In some years the various teams are more competitive with each other - last year was a great example of that - but even in years where one team is dominating like this year, there are two drivers with the same car. So you can always do an A/B comparison between the two drivers that have the same car.
Mercedes has won the first six races.
Antonelli has won five of those races. Russell has won the other one.
In fact, Russell is no longer in second place in total points. Hamilton (Ferrari) has taken over second.
