A woman working in a beach ramp toll booth was killed on Monday after being hit by a pickup truck, the Volusia Sheriff's Office says.
It happened shortly before 1 p.m., VSO said, when a vehicle traveling eastbound on Dunlawton Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores hit the toll booth staffed by an attendant employed by the county's parking operations contractor – 62-year-old Tammie Joe Baker.
Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the toll booth was crushed.
"It flipped the booth around," Chitwood said.
"Tragically, the attendant did not survive the incident. The driver of the vehicle is currently in law enforcement custody, and the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under active investigation by the Volusia Sheriff's Office. Due to the ongoing investigation, the Dunlawton beach access ramp will remain closed until further notice," the county said in a news release.
The sheriff said the suspect, identified as Deanna Harrell, was tested for impairment. Chitwood said he could smell alcohol in the vehicle.
Harrell "is in custody under Florida's Baker Act," Chitwood said in an updated release.
Harrell is from Ormond Beach.
"She tried to drive away," Chitwood said.
Chitwood said he was surprised more people weren't hit.
'She'.
