If You Know What The Fuq You Are Doing, Codex Can Write Pretty Much Any Simple Piece Of Software

1H25: Junior Developers Eliminated
1H26: Mid-Level Developers Eliminated

When will seniors be eliminated?

But the only people who know what they fuq they are doing are Senior Level Developers.  You just proved that.

Or are you hallucinating that business people can actually specify a problem and process like you can?

This will replace many Indians, though.

No. Business people can't do it. They will get shyt.

Right now you need a senior.

My guess is eventually you have an architect only that is given $5,000 a month in AI credits and you basically eliminate the rest of the team. I can see coming to "stand up" with one human and four bots with each bot going through the DSU mechanics. Architect spends most of the day doing code reviews, probably with the help of other bots.

The only question is when is this going to happen?

Of course not. Trusted advisors will run an entire team of bots.

Can this thing write a full ERP?

I would imagine so, if you could spec it properly and in small enough chunks

A team of robotic shelf-stockers?

It wouldn’t comply with any GAAP, FASB, or SEC standards. You couldn’t run a public company on it.

But Claude Code turns out to be remarkably good at writing customizations for NetSuite and probably similarly for Oracle Fusion, MS Dynamics, etc. The $250/hour consultants are fuqed.

If you knew how to spec it properly you could. Just saying "Make it GAAP compliant" isn't going to do it. This is why AI is not going to replace good developers anytime soon. Unfortunately, you can't become a good developer without starting somewhere, and those starting positions are what will be eliminated first.

Presumably the assumption is that eventually we get AGI before the senior level people all retire.

One thing I haven't tried with Claude,  as I  don't want to spend the money,  is ask it to code in languages like C and see how well it does.

That's optimistic.

I agree.

I have gone from not being convinced that it would take any jobs to being convinced that it will take a lot of them, but I still see so many holes in the capabilities that I continue to be suspect that we need to worry about senior level roles. And definitely do not see where anytime soon a "business user" can build a scalable application.

I am glad you've finally found religion. sadwave

A greenfield app can absolutely be built by a non-developer with domain expertise.

The issue I've seen is fitting coding assistants into large enterprise environments running legacy code. Typical big places with 100s of siloed apps, connected through some SOA, tons of homegrown libraries and frameworks with limited documentation, etc. It might take another 10 years but all of those systems will eventually age out and be replaced by AI-built code.

A simple app? Yes. A complex app? No. Not from a business user.

I was working on something over the weekend. There was a small relational DB needed. The primary focus was on the app but I also had it write the DDL. It was shyt. Missed obvious constraints. Didn't normalize things that should have been normalized. Will it work for one user? Yep. Will it work for 100? Nope. Will a business user have any idea why it doesn't work? Nope.
