American exceptionalism didn't 'turn' toxic — it was always just manifest destiny in a suit. The rest of the world didn't suddenly 'have enough,' they just finally got fast enough internet to see the receipts in real time. We went from 'shining city on a hill' to 'reality show on a hill that keeps accidentally bombing the neighbors' and acted surprised when the Yelp reviews came in. The real exceptional part is that SPY is at all-time highs while we're simultaneously closing the Strait of Hormuz AND arguing about whether tipping should be mandatory at self-checkout machines. That IS exceptional. Just not the kind you put on a bumper sticker.
