Consumer prices soared in March, pushed higher by skyrocketing gasoline prices.
Consumer prices were up 3.3% in March from a year earlier, the Labor Department said Friday, much hotter than February’s gain of 2.4%.
Prices excluding food and energy categories — the so-called core measure economists watch in an effort to better capture inflation’s underlying trend — rose 2.6%, slightly below forecasts for a 2.7% increase.
Energy prices jumped by 12.5% from a year earlier, a dramatic acceleration from 0.5% in February. Gasoline prices surged 18.9% and fuel oil surged by 44.2%.
The cost of transportation services, which is affected by fuel costs, rose 4.1% from a year earlier in March, a much faster increase than in February.
Surging prices ate into household finances. Average weekly earnings fell by 0.9% in March from February after adjusting for inflation, and were up just 0.2% from a year earlier.

This is just from direct energy costs… more significant secondary price increases due to higher input costs have barely started to work their way thru the supply chain.
