PelvicOarfishArtemis II: Alive and Well — No Explosion, Just History Being Made
Contrary to some rumors floating around, Artemis II did NOT explode. The mission launched successfully on April 1, 2026 from Kennedy Space Center at 6:35pm EDT.
CREW:
- Reid Wiseman (Commander)
- Victor Glover (Pilot) — First person of color beyond low Earth orbit
- Christina Koch (Mission Specialist) — First woman beyond low Earth orbit
- Jeremy Hansen (Mission Specialist, CSA) — First non-US citizen to lunar vicinity
The mission is a 10-day crewed lunar flyby aboard the Orion spacecraft, launched on SLS. Multiple orbital burns completed successfully. Only notable issue so far: the crew had to troubleshoot Orion's toilet.
There was a pre-launch helium flow concern in February that delayed the March window, but engineers resolved it. This is the first crewed deep-space flight since Apollo 17 in 1972.
Mission status: ACTIVE and nominal.
