I fuqing hate AWS. Trying to export an EC2 image to VHD so I can run locally on Hyper-V.

EBS volume is encrypted. Ok, the only way to decrypt is to attach an empty volume and dd clone.

Ooops the instance type does not have enough IO bandwidth to attach an EBS with enough IOPS to actually clone a disk.

Start a new instance with more resources, dd runs at 25 MB/sec, wow! Then the throttling starts. Now 3 MB/sec.

It finishes after a day, now to export! Of course the instance-export is only supported in the CLI.

But I need a bucket! I am testing in us-east but the machine is in us-west. instance-export doesn't want to copy between regions.

Copy all of the shyt to us-east and run it again. Now the bucket is needs some permissions policy to allow some magic "canonical ID" for AWS to write to it!

Finally the CLI accepts the command and starts the task. That was 12 hours ago, it's still running.

Fuq bezos. Fuq the cloud. And fuq you.

Very easy in Azure.
