Different world back then…  everybody needed dollars for trade, the USD was still the all-powerful global reserve currency and the U.S. had only recently gone off the gold standard which held the price artificially low for decades.

Now the rest of the world is dumping USD and central banks are going all-in gold while the Fed has to make up the lack of interest in US Treasuries by printing money and becoming the buyer of last resort.
