The Rev. Michael Pfleger expressed frustration after three men were shot near St. Sabina Church on Sunday afternoon.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger has spent decades advocating against gun violence in Auburn Gresham, where he serves as pastor of St. Sabina Church.

So when an argument spilled out of a basketball game at the church’s gymnasium and spurred a shooting that left three men wounded this weekend, Pfleger took it personally.

“I’m really pissed off and angry,” he said. “It’s a disrespect toward St. Sabina, what it stands for.”

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of West 78th Place, where the church is located. The suspected gunman hasn’t been arrested, according to Chicago police.

A 30-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, police said. A 33-year-old man was struck in the foot and taken to Holy Cross Hospital, and a 38-year-old man was shot in the hip and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Pfleger said St. Sabina isn’t affiliated with the league that organized the game, but the church rents its gym every Sunday. Although security personnel were present, Pfleger said the players weren’t searched because the church “hoped that adults can act like adults.”

The league has now been suspended from using the gym. “There’s consequences for that kind of behavior,” Pfleger said.

The shooting was captured by surveillance cameras, and Pfleger said he’s hopeful investigators have enough evidence to make an arrest.

“When people shoot people, they gotta go to jail,” he said. “Without consequences, there’s no change in behavior.”

Sunday’s shooting wasn’t the first time gunfire erupted close to the church this year. In May, seven teens were wounded when someone opened fire from a passing car while police were dispersing a crowd near the church.

Pfleger said that group had gathered for a post-prom party, and he doesn’t believe the victims were from the area. Still, he said, that attack felt just as personal as Sunday’s shooting.

“It reminds us that while we have worked so hard over the years and violence is way down ... at any moment things can change,” he said.

He said he’s open to allowing the basketball league to rent the gym again — but not without increased security measures, such as pat downs and bag checks.

“I’m not one of these forever-and-ever people, but it would have new guidelines,” Pfleger said. “The rules change when the game changes.”
