It looks like fun - is it? I've been, of course, but visiting a place and living in a place are different experiences. Do you need to speak Chinese to do daily things? If so, Cantonese or Mandarin? Cantonese is obviously the predominant dialect, but the Mainland is trying to change that.

Sounds like a question for AI

yes - most everyone here is a billionaire who has extensively traveled the world (*side note - weirdly no one has enough money to fund CI for even a few months).
Looking forward to wild stories of high-rolling in Hong Kong.

I guess my primary concern is that it would be difficult to live there without speaking some dialect of Chinese.

Assclown Mini TacosI used to live there - the most notable thing is that accommodation is absurdly fuqing expensive although most other things are reasonable. It's got very good transport connections, especially to other places in Asia.
If you are living on the island then you can generally get away speaking only English - if you're up in the new territories (especially the northern new territories) then you really need to know Cantonese and Mandarin isn't going to help you much. Overall, Mandarin is probably slightly less useful than English - in general the places were people speak it are the places where tourists go and these are the same places that lots of people speak English.

This is great to know. So the island, how about Kowloon? Still English-friendly?
Also, are the Chinese contemptuous of whites in HK?

Copilot response seems accurate:
"Living in Hong Kong is a whirlwind of energy, culture, and convenience. It’s a city that never really slows down, with people moving at a fast pace and life happening outdoors due to compact living spaces. The skyline is breathtaking, and the mix of old and new—from bustling street markets to futuristic shopping malls—creates a unique urban experience1.
As for language, English is widely spoken, especially in business, government, and tourism. While Cantonese is the dominant language in daily life, many locals understand English, and signage is bilingual2. Mandarin is becoming more common, but Cantonese remains the primary spoken language. You can get by with English, but learning a few Cantonese phrases can make interactions smoother and more enjoyable"

Most of Kowloon is pretty ok for English - with the prevalence increasing as you go south. It tracks pretty well will the degree of urbanization, so the places well to the north are the ones where you might have problems finding English speakers.
There is also an unfortunate correlation where the places that have the most English speakers tend to me the most expensive too

The" light show" in Hong Kong is literally nothing. A couple building put colored lights out. It is literally nothing. They call it an attraction. It isn't.
Nice place to stay is the Hotel Icon. I stayed there last time in a nice room with a great view near the top. Great gym, you can see the whole city from the pool. Good breakfast as well but there are some Russians at the hotel and they are always the most whiny asshole little bitches you will ever have to deal with.

HongKongers don't like Russians either - they are complaining about them these days.

Were there a lot of Russians staying there?

It's a nice background if you are watching from the TST side, but IMO not really interesting enough to consider it as something to go out and see. At this point, there are much fancier light shows on some of the buildings in Shenzhen. The new years fireworks are pretty good though.
Edit:
And personally I didn't see that many Russians - the biggest identifiable group of eastern euros I found in HK were the attractive young women from Russia/Ukraine/Poland/Czech Republic that generally seem to be hookers headed for Macau.

That HK Phil Ingram dude seemed really together and stable. Wonder whatever happened to him. Probably got carved up and tossed in a dumpster.
