Re: Lee County: 'hundreds of fatalities' expected from Ian

Getting there!

The death toll from Hurricane Ian continued to rise Saturday, as rescuers combed through flooded homes and rubble. So did the number of lives saved.

The Florida Medical Examiners Association reported 24 confirmed deaths as of Saturday afternoon. Most were elderly people who drowned. The majority occurred Lee County, followed by the surrounding areas of southwest Florida, but the devastation stretched across the state, particularly in the east central region.

A woman in Volusia County drowned after a wave swept her into the ocean. A man in Sarasota County fell off a roof while putting up rain shutters.

The number is likely much higher than 24. To confirm a death, a medical examiner must conduct an autopsy and conclude that it was related to Hurricane Ian. The number does not include the many still unconfirmed dead reported by state and local officials or found by rescuers. Media reports conflict as to the exact number of fatalities so far because they include confirmed and unconfirmed fatalities. Many suggest that the toll could surpass 50.

Re: Lee County: 'hundreds of fatalities' expected from Ian

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said the death toll from Ian has risen to 35 deaths.

Marceno made the announcement in a Facebook post.
Marceno also said there have been about 600 to 700 rescues as of Saturday morning.

Re: Lee County: 'hundreds of fatalities' expected from Ian

The Myakka River has overflowed onto I-75, causing its closure.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, due to the rising water the interstate will be closed from mile marker 179 (North Port/Toledo Blade Boulevard) to mile marker 193 (Englewood/Jacaranda Boulevard).

Motorists planning to travel to Southwest Florida on I-75 should seek an alternate route

Now take a look at the view of the river from I-75:  https://www.google.com/maps/@27.1110226 … 8192?hl=en
lol

The boat and house there are obviously gone. And that's probably good, because look at what a shythoal the house was before the river ate it:

Re: Lee County: 'hundreds of fatalities' expected from Ian

We have a friend who lives in Fort Myers and while he and his family are good he texted me today that the death toll is going to be huge.

Sanibel Island is a huge total wipeout and we can expect a large number of deaths from stupid people who didn't fuqing leave.  He told me they are finding bodies in the marshes and I wonder how many will simply disappear forever? From what I heard so far we can expect hundreds and hundreds dead.

We are in the mountains of north Georgia where we plan to stay at least another week, possibly two weeks, then maybe go back.

Wife and I have never sat through a hurricane ALWAYS getting the fuq out of town three days before it is projected to hit.

Re: Lee County: 'hundreds of fatalities' expected from Ian

The Cape Romano 'dome home' is finally gone.

The remaining four Cape Romano dome homes have indeed collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico following a final lashing by Hurricane Ian, photos and videos from a local sheller confirm.

Alex Demooy of Breakwater Adventures and Athena Custodio, both of Naples, were out shelling on Friday morning when they came across what remained of the iconic and popular structures. At one point in time they were fully on land, built in 1982, but erosion had in a sense pushed the homes into the water. After Hurricane Irma in 2017, two of the homes sunk.

Now, just the concrete top of one of the dome homes could be seen at low tide, appearing almost like the back of a small white whale as it comes up for air. The pilings and rods jutted out of the water as well.

Re: Lee County: 'hundreds of fatalities' expected from Ian

A 68-year-old woman died after she was swept into the Atlantic Ocean by powerful storm surges during the height of Hurricane Ian’s wrath in Volusia County, reports said.

Volusia Beach officials said the unidentified woman from Kentucky was pulled into the ocean by storm surge Thursday as her family ventured out near Ormond Beach to watch as the worst of Hurricane Ian battered the east coast of the state.

Officials said the woman was swept into the water but quickly rescued by her son. WESH reported that the two tried to get off the beach, but a stairway collapsed, sending the woman back into the water.

Rescuers, hampered by the then-tropical storm conditions, arrived soon after but were unable to revive the woman.

Re: Lee County: 'hundreds of fatalities' expected from Ian

On Saturday evening, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced there have been 47 deaths attributed to the hurricane so far — mostly from drowning.

The Associated Press reported that 54 people in both the U.S. and Cuba were confirmed dead including four in North Carolina and three in Cuba.

These included a 62-year-old woman who was hurt and drowned after a tree fell on her mobile home, a 54-year-old man who drowned after being trapped in a window, and a Lee County woman whose body was found tangled in wires under a home.

Re: Lee County: 'hundreds of fatalities' expected from Ian

As of Friday, 10,000 people remain unaccounted for. lol

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said its priorities as of Saturday are search and rescue operations, emergency debris removal, commodity distribution and restoring power and water.

Telecom companies are allowing other networks’ customers to roam on their cell towers, and Elon Musk will donate over 100 Starlink satellites from his company, SpaceX, to Lee and Charlotte counties to provide internet to the area. Of those, 30 have already been deployed, DeSantis announced Saturday.

Moar support from our greatest African-American. Thanks Elon.
