Communities across the nation have canceled contracts for Flock cameras after public pushback, but that doesn’t mean surveillance tools are going away.

Flock has faced increasing scrutiny for its AI-powered license-plate readers that can allow law enforcement to track the movement of people through a community.

But even as Flock cameras have come down, some communities have quietly replaced them with other, less-notorious brands that do essentially the same thing.

While communities have pulled contracts with Flock Safety after public pressure, some have simply pivoted to other brands like Axon, which operate similarly to Flock. But Axon and other companies haven’t received the same kind of publicity.
